The journey of the two SWISS Experience Trainees Constantin and Nadine continues. Scroll down to find out more. You’ll find our first blog post under this link: https://blog.swiss.com/de/2019/01/die-swiss-experience-trainees/.
Next destination
After five months at SWISS headquarters in Zurich-Kloten, we moved on to our second project assignment at other ground stations. Constantin had the pleasure of enjoying life in Thailand’s vibrant capital Bangkok and experiencing its airport for two months. In the meantime, Nadine gained experience in an extremely multicultural environment at one of Asia’s biggest airports in the financial centre Singapore.
Final destination
For the last five months of the traineeship, we organised the areas for the final project assignment ourselves to suit our interests.
Nadine
I spent my last project assignment in product management. In Onboard Lifecycle & Operations, we are responsible for creating the customer experience in Food & Beverage (F&B) and hospitality on board. This includes every stage in the product development, from logistics to quality assurances and audits.
My main activity is to provide support in developing the culinary offer on board. For instance, we plan the menu cycles for First and Business Class, in each of which we celebrate a different guest canton on board for three months and work together with a chef from that particular region. We also work very closely with our catering partner at Zurich airport.
I am also involved in the development, testing and introduction of new products in F&B. Furthermore, I run minor projects independently, for which I am involved with other parties such as the internal design team and an agency.
Sustainability is extremely important during my time in product management (as well as in the future). We try to include these aspects as broadly as possible in our decisions, and especially in the choice of menus and other F&B products, their packaging, recycling, and in the minimisation of food waste.

My current project is in Aircraft Asset Management (AAM). In SWISS Technics, AAM is responsible for the phase-in and phase-out of aircraft and engines. Whether owned outright or leased, AAM manages the contracts for these extremely valuable assets that SWISS needs in all its daily operations. AAM works daily with other specialist departments at SWISS and the Lufthansa Group in order to ensure that the required aircraft are available. Another aspect of this task is the close coordination of co-operations with the various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) over years, because orders for aircraft have to be made years in advance.
AAM is also involved in sustainability. At the moment, investments in new aircraft are the best lever in reducing the emissions per passenger. SWISS already plays a leading role here: the introduction of the C Series/A220 has made SWISS one of the most efficient airlines in short- and medium-haul. The first of the A320neos will also soon be here, and will further reduce emissions.
My tasks in Asset Management are all about digitalisation. Having correct and up-to-date information contributes greatly towards the value of an aircraft. In the technical division, this is a combination of the maintenance/consumption details and the financial aspects of our aircraft. This means we are better able to evaluate and where appropriate to market our aircraft. My project is about providing this information automatically and more quickly, and then presenting it in an internal standard.
Outbound connection
The time has simply flown by. Our one-year Trainee Programme officially ended at the end of September 2019. Fortunately, we are both able to continue our current assignments until the end of the year, by which time we will also be in the application stage for permanent employment.
With lots of wonderful memories of our trainee year, we must now say goodbye from the blog. If you would like to know more about the year-long SWISS Experience Trainee Programme, you will find all the relevant information at: http://bit.ly/2W0pMX4.
